Checklist: Renovating listed buildings
The Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) supports the energy-efficient renovation of buildings worthy of preservation.
1. Talk to experts
At the beginning you should consult a recognised expert (KfW-Effizienzhaus Denkmal). This is also a prerequisite for KfW funding. You can find the right experts on the website of the German Energy Agency (dena).
2. Funding criteria
Listed buildings worthy of funding must meet certain KfW criteria. For example, energy consumption after renovation may only be 60 percent higher than that of comparable new buildings.
3. Simplified funding criteria
If the targeted energy consumption cannot be achieved due to high requirements on the part of the building conservation authorities, KfW offers less strict funding conditions.
A KfW “Effizienzhaus Denkmal” (listed efficiency house) is supported with a loan of up to 100,000 euros per housing unit, depending on the scope of the planned renovation. Furthermore, a repayment subsidy and a non-repayable investment grant are also possible. More information can be found on the KfW website under “Effizienzhaus Denkmal”.
